Defcon Autonomous Sentry gun
atlas
[info]spacecowb0y
The electronics for this project are going to be relatively simple as well. To control the three servos (pan + tilt + firing), we are going to use the Pololu 8-channel servo controller. Normally we might use an atmega to do the control, however I already created code to control the pololu controller for another project and it's really inexpensive/easy to use. If it required more complicated feedback or logic, a microcontroller might have been the better choice, but in this case it wasn't, so the right decision was just to use the Pololu controller. To control the valve, we had two options. One was to use another channel on the servo controller and something like a Banebot motor controller to apply power to the electronic valve, the other was to use the servo that pushes the plunger to push a switch that opens the valve. The latter option was chosen.

Unmanned Flight Record Broken by Solar Plane
atlas
[info]spacecowb0y

A lightweight solar-powered plane has smashed the official world record for the longest-duration unmanned flight.

UK defence firm Qinetiq, which built the Zephyr unmanned aerial vehicle, said it flew for 54 hours during tests.

The researchers believe it is the first time a solar-powered craft has flown under its own power through two nights.

The previous unmanned endurance record was set in 2001 by a jet-powered US Air Force Global Hawk surveillance aircraft which flew for more than 30 hours.

The Zephyr's 54-hour endurance flight will not enter the record books because representatives from the world air sports federation - the FAI - were not notified about the secretive test.

However, they were informed about a second, 33-hour flight which could still become an official record.

Zephyr's development team say that whatever the result, it believes it has built a record breaker.

"This aeroplane is going to go a lot higher and a lot further," Chris Kelleher, Zephyr's technical director and "pilot", told the BBC News website. "You ain't seen nothing yet."

Rocketboy to be in Guiness Book of World Records
atlas
[info]spacecowb0y
Meng “Rocketboy” Yang will be included in the Guiness Book of World Records Gaming Edition for winning the most amount of money in a single game.

“Game” meaning the one map match that saw Rocketboy win $125,000 when he beat Fata1ty in Doom 3 at the Great Wall of China. This match took place nearly three years ago, on Oct. 15, 2004.

An interesting note about this match: Yang had to pirate a copy of Doom 3 in order to practice because it wasn’t even available in China at the time. Talk about stacking the odds in America’s favor.

World Record Subwoofer Crunks 180.5 dB
atlas
[info]spacecowb0y

On August 31st the bar was set just a bit higher in dB Drag competition. Alan Dante set the new record at 180.5dB with a single subwoofer. Let me say that again... WITH A SINGLE SUBWOOFER.

Alan Dante's concrete filled Volvo is louder than dynamite, jet engines, gunfire, NASA rockets and pretty much any sound you can imagine for that matter aside from nuclear bombs and natural disasters.

The 180.5 score was done with a Digital Designs 9918Z 18" subwoofer receiving 26,000 watts of power from four Stetsom 7KD amplifiers. Fifteen Powermaster 16 volt batteries were used as well. Rumor has it that the setup is good for at least another decibel, so expect to possibly see an even higher number in the near future.

Storm Worm Botnet Now World's Most Powerful Supercomputer
atlas
[info]spacecowb0y
Nearly nine months after it was first discovered, the Storm Worm Trojan continues to surge, building what experts believe could be the world’s most powerful supercomputer.

The Trojan, which uses a myriad of social engineering lures to trick Windows users into downloading malware, has successfully seeded a massive botnet — between one million and 10 million CPUs — producing computing power to rival the world’s top 10 supercomputers

By New Zealand computer scientist Peter Gutman’s calculations, the Storm Worm botnet “may be the first time that a top 10 supercomputer has been controlled not by a government or mega-corporation but by criminals.”

At current infection rates, Gutman’s concerns are genuine and the relentless nature of the ongoing attacks suggest that the criminal minds behind this botnet are far from satisfied.

Malware researchers tracking the threat are privately awed by the sheer volume of spam with social engineering lures to malicious executables. “It’s nonstop, never-ending,” said a virus analyst at a major computer security firm.

The attackers have tied the spam lures to global news events, links to YouTube videos and online greeting cards. The sophisticated operation includes the use of fast-flux networks to avoid shutdowns, a rootkit component to hide from anti-virus scanners and a P2P command-and-control structure that makes it near impossible to kill the controlling server.

The Storm Worm attackers have also hacked into legitimate Web sites and used iFrame redirects to send surfers to Web servers hosting malware downloaders.

Now, according to Finjan security researcher Aviv Raff, the group has started to target tech-savvy computer users.

“Up until now, they’ve put greeting cards for holidays, and video downloads. Today they’ve changed their website and put a “Download Tor” Web page,” Raff said in an interview.

SanDisk Sansa View 16GB Declares War on the nano
atlas
[info]spacecowb0y

SanDisk declares war in the flash MP3 player market by offering twice as much storage capacity for the same price as Apple's nano 3G.

SanDisk today announced the new Sansa View, a sleek video enabled MP3 player with 16GB storage capacity. A significant step-up from the company's Sansa e200 music player series, the 8.8mm thin Sansa View features music, photos, FM radio and audio books. In addition, the Sansa View supports playback of H.264, WMV and MPEG4 encoded videos, which can be watched on a 2.4" (320x240 pixels) widescreen display. As for navigation, the Sansa View relies upon a backlit scroll wheel.

Set to compete with Apple's nano 3G, the Sansa View is slightly thicker (8.8mm vs. 6.5 mm) and offers a slightly bigger screen (2.4" vs. 2"). The Sansa View also claims slightly better battery life than Apple's nano 3G, and most notably SanDisk offers twice as much storage capacity for the same price. High storage capacity at low prices has always been an important factor for the success of the iPod, so it'll be interesting to follow the performance of the Sansa View.

For additional storage capacity, the Sansa View sports a microSDHC slot that supports cards up to 24GB. SanDisk's Sansa Media Converter will be available through a one-time software download, which transcodes numerous video files, including DivX. The MP3 player also supports music download and subscription services, including Rhapsody To Go, Napster, eMusic and others.

Insert Random Text into Word
atlas
[info]spacecowb0y
Microsoft Word allows you to quickly insert sample text into a document. To do this, type =rand() in the document where you want the text to appear, and then press ENTER.

By default, the sample text contains three paragraphs, with each paragraph containing five sentences. You can control how many paragraphs and sentences appear by adding numbers inside the parentheses.

The =rand() function has the following syntax

=rand(p,s)

where p is the number of paragraphs and s is the number of sentences that you want to appear in each paragraph.
