Crayon Physics Deluxe
atlas
[info]spacecowb0y
Crayon Physics Deluxe is a sequel to the popular freeware game Crayon Physics. Or you can think of it as the game I would have created if I would have had more than 7 days to do it. Way more than 7 days. More like 7 months or 17 months.

Anyway Crayon Physics Deluxe is a 2D physics puzzle game, in which you get to experience what it would be like if your drawings would be magically transformed into real physical objects. Solve puzzles with your artistic vision and creative use of physics.

You can read more about the game from my blog. Also you can test the original prototype which is freely available. But please understand that the prototype isn’t a demo version of this game and doesn’t reflect the quality of Crayon Physics Deluxe.

Hellgate: London Screws Asian Players
atlas
[info]spacecowb0y
The already rocky launch of Hellgate: London in Asia has gotten even rockier. After several weeks of server crashing issues, a patch known as Patch0 was created to help solve the problem. After numerous attempts to apply the patch to the servers it was discovered that the only way to make it work would be to perform a complete character wipe. Needless to say, Asian players of the game who have spent hours leveling up their characters are furious and in an attempt to appease them, IAH Games is offering players a months worth of free play time. Now at least they won't have to pay for all the time they will have to spend grinding back up to where they were before the wipe if they choose to continue playing.

From the press release:

[Urgent News] Implementation of Patch0
10/11/2007
Gamers,
Thank you for your patience while we worked to upload Patch0 onto our local servers. For the past two weeks, IAHGames and our partners have worked overnight almost everyday as they attempted to implement Patch0 onto our existing servers.
In the end, it has been determined that there is no way to implement Patch0 onto our Hellgate: London servers without also discarding relevant player data.
Because of this, when Patch0 is installed on Tuesday, there will be a complete character wipe.

|We understand this event is frustrating for you, and we are sorry for the problems in implementing Patch0. As compensation, we are providing all gamers who purchased both the Standard and Collector's Edition Box Sets 4 weeks of free subscription benefits. Each box already includes 30 days of free subscription benefits, meaning all of you will be entitled to 60 days of free subscription when the service becomes active around the end of the year.

Given how hardcore (read: serious about their characters) Asian gamers are, this isn't something Flagship Studios is going to recover from anytime soon. Whatever happened to backups? As a friend of mine is wont to say: "That's 'gg' right there."

I'm not sure what's more soul-crushing—that someone took the effort to write a web-based Pac-Man text adventure in the style of Zork or that I just spent fifteen minutes ensuring that it adhered to the maze layout perfectly. Regardless, your semi-daily reminder that someone has far too much time on their hands is at the official Pac-Txt site.

English Exerpts of Boxer's Biography
atlas
[info]spacecowb0y
It isn’t every day that the most popular gamer in the world writes a biography, so imagine our elation when we learned that portions of Lim “Boxer” Yo Hwan’s autobiography Crazy As Me have been translated into English.

The autobiography contains tales of the young StarCraft emperor growing up, with parents who loved him but discouraged him from playing too many videogames.

Several insightful chapters can be read at The Boxer Biography blog, though at times the Korean to English translation needs some help.

Akihabara News Plays Initial D Arcade Stage 4 Limited
atlas
[info]spacecowb0y
3 Weeks ago, Sega invited us in order to enjoy some of the coolest games at the Sega Joypolis in Odaiba Tokyo. Among several nice stuff we could spend time playing with the latest arcade game version of Initial D, the ultimate manga for all Drift fans.
Since several months, Japanese gamers had the chance to play to Initial D in one of the car shown in the manga, especially the TOYOTA TRUENO, used by the young hero of this sequel.
Basically, like a full flight simulator used to train airplanes pilots, Sega mounted 3 cars, a Toyota Truneo, a Subaru Impreza WRX and a Mazda RX7 on top of a moving platform, which will simulate your driving style.

I have to say that I was not prepared for such a FUN! Not only the video game and graphics are pretty nice and really realistic when it come to driving experience, the roads on the videos games are taken from real roads in Japan (or sometimes close to real ones), but the moving platform is to my options the killer in this game, it is as violent as in real and you will feel you car drifting or doing power slide as real as if you where in a real car and road.
The steering wheel gives good feedback and you really feel like driving a real thing… IMPRESSIVE.

Crysis: DX10 Features in XP
atlas
[info]spacecowb0y

If you tweak the configuration files in \CVarGroups\ by copying and pasting the "very high" settings (1st paragraph) IN PLACE of the "high" settings (last paragraph) the game will load the highest possible settings even though the drop-down menus display "high."

The difference between "high" settings and the tweaked settings is immense: shadows are deeper, more realistic; the leaves have better reflective properties, better textures; the colours are better; and the level of detail is simply stunning.

With these settings I'm running the game between 15-25 FPS at 1440x900 and (wait for it) 8x AA, and it looks PERFECT. Best of all, this is in XP.

So I'm happy. I have XP and I'm playing the game at settings higher than DX9 allows (strictly speaking).

Give this a try if your rig can handle it.

Crysis Demo: DX9 vs. DX10
atlas
[info]spacecowb0y

Above are some sample screenshots from the Crysis demo showing differences between the DirectX 9 and DirectX 10 versions. All screenshots were captured at 1280x1024 with 16Q AA and downsized for this page. DX9 screens have all video settings set "High" while DX10 screens are set to "Very High" (Very High is only a selectable option when running DX10, otherwise High is the limit). The game was run on Windows Vista x64 using a GeForce 8800GTS 640MB with the beta 169.01 drivers. There are probably many more differences out there, both subtle and obvious, waiting to be pointed out.

--

DX9 seems to use a large, general blur for the depth of field effect when your gun is zoomed. DX10 produces a more realistic effect, keeping certain (in this case distant) objects out of focus without going overboard.

Two more examples at the source, with the big difference being the underwater shot. Anybody else think the difference is negligible? I don't know, I still maintain that if a game holds up even when all the shiny graphics are stripped, then that's a game worth paying attention to. I'm here to game, not be dazzled by hyperrealistic graphics - if I wanted those I can just go outside.

The Eye of Judgement: Now Pwned by Felt-Tipped Markers
atlas
[info]spacecowb0y

We've already proven that the collectible cards for The Eye of Judgment are easily copyable, but some Japanese 2channel message board posters have an even lower tech solution for skirting card security. Allegedly, some DIY PlayStation 3 owners have created their own fake cards without requiring an original scan nor access to special inks, generating them with Photoshop or simply drawing out the basic identifying shapes by hand with a couple of colored felt-tipped markers.

Unfortunately, the west coast office has no access to a copy of The Eye of Judgment with which to test this out. It's actually I'm quite interested in pursuing, as I asked the game's North American producers just how they had planned to circumvent card copying and cheating at E3 earlier this year. They didn't seem the slightest bit concerned at the time.

Given that one of their revenue streams may be drying up, should guilt-free players opt not to drop $15 on theme packs or $4 on booster packs, we wonder how concerned they are now.

*slow clap* Bravo!

New StarCraft II Concept Art Released

[info]spacecowb0y
Blizzard today released some new concept art for StarCraft II, showing off a lot of undetermined Protoss technology and Infested Kerrigan’s booty. While SC2’s release date has yet to be announced, and the Zerg themselves haven’t been shown (aside from the token Zerglings), we have seen more and more screenshots and concept art images lately.

Tide yourself over with these while you wait, slavering at the mouth, for the new messiah.

SSF2T HD Remix: Work-in-Progress Screenshots
atlas
[info]spacecowb0y

I’m pretty excited about today’s SFHD update. Rey has given me some early work-in-progress screenshots of the game. By “work-in-progress,” I mean these screenshots do NOT reflect how the final game will look exactly, but they should give you a pretty good idea. So please keep that in mind when you are viewing them. In his written update, Rey talks about the look of the characters, UI, and also clarifies the issue of which version of the game SFHD is being based on.

More screens at the source. Looks a bit raw, but I'm sure it'll be the pants when it comes out (on the PC as well, hopefully).

Hellgate: London Demo Contains Adware?
atlas
[info]spacecowb0y
Several angry emails have entered my inbox because people installing the newly released Hellgate: London demo have noticed that the game includes adware, advertising that is integrated into software. Here's the pertinent section of the license you have to agree to abide by once Hellgate is installed onto your system:

The Software incorporates technology of Massive Incorporated ("Massive") that enables in-game advertising, and the display of other similar in-game objects, which are uploaded temporarily to your personal computer or game console and replaced during online game play. As part of this process, Massive may collect your Internet protocol address and other basic anonymous information, and will use this information for the general purposes of transmitting and measuring in-game advertising. Massive does not store or use any of this information for the purpose of discovering your personal identity. For additional details regarding Massive’s in-game advertising practices, and to understand your options with respect to in-game advertising and data collection, please see Massive's privacy policy. The trademarks and copyrighted material contained in all in-game advertising are the property of the respective owners. Portions of this product are © 2007 Massive Incorporated. All rights reserved.

Consent to Use of Data. You agree that EA, its affiliates, and each Related Party may collect, use, store and transmit technical and related information that identifies your computer, including without limitation your Internet Protocol address, operating system, application software and peripheral hardware, that may be gathered periodically to facilitate the provision of software updates, dynamically served content, product support and other services to you, including online play. EA and/or the Related Parties may also use this information in the aggregate and, in a form which does not personally identify you, to improve our products and services and we may share that aggregate data with our third party service providers.

For the time being the only adverts are posters on walls in certain areas, though with the adware fully integrated into the game you could soon be beating back Zombie Summoners with the Sword of Soft Drinks, 6-15 Coke splash damage per successful hit. Or perhaps the Gun of Crashing, Vista Edition, as Massive are owned by Microsoft.

"Is that a 747 simulator in your room or are you just happy to see me?"
atlas
[info]spacecowb0y

John Davis spent eight years and £15,000 building a Boeing 747 flight simulator in a room in his house. And now the 47-year-old's hobby has turned into such a full-time occupation that he has jacked in his job as a graphic designer to run a full-time flight simulation business from his home in Coventry, UK.

Next month, John and a bunch of his mates are simulating a round-the-world trip to raise funds for his local Air Ambulance. As well as a virtual air-traffic control team, there will be an In-flight entertainment provided by a Scottish Elvis impersonator, and the wife of one of the crew members, a chef, will be on food duty.
